Do you use Voice Control on your iPhone?

So I have to be honest on this one. I had accidentally found it a few times and didn’t really realize what it was until the AT&T guy showed it to my wife when I finally got her an iPhone (She resisted getting one forever and the guy had her sold in like 2 minutes). I still don’t use it but feel like I should.

Voice Control is a feature built into the OS on your iPhone. It allows you to make calls, access music and other things via, you guessed it, your voice. I could spill all the details but I am going to let one of my favorite sites TUAW (The Unofficial Apple Weblog) do it for you. They just did this article as part of their iPhone 101 series. I am going to share it with you in hopes that you don’t leave me for them.

From time to time I want to share the sites I learn from if you want to move deeper into the world of iPhone use. I follow a ton of different sites and part of my goal is to take what I have learned and put it in one simple place for you!

Zwapp – Need More Apps?

I was forwarded a Facebook post last night about someone’s “billion-dollar” idea for the iPhone. They wanted Apple to give them app recommendations based on apps they have/liked. Well I hate to tell them but several people beat them to the punch. I will cover some others soon but one very interesting new entry into this field is an app called Zwapp.

One of the most popular conversation topics between two iPhone owners starts with “What apps do you have?” I cannot tell you how many times I have done this. Well, Zwapp takes that conversation onto your iPhone.

Once you download Zwapp from MillMobile you create a free account and Zwapp will scan your iPhone for what apps you have. You can give apps a thumbs up or leave a review.

Now comes the fun part, Zwapp is a social network app. You can connect to friends that have the app through your Twitter or Facebook account, your iPhone address book or just search for users to follow.

You are now ready to discover new apps. You can see what your friends are downloading and like as well as browse popular apps on Zwapp. There is also a very interesting “Popular apps your friends don’t have yet” list so you can be the one telling your friends what apps to get.

What, you haven’t heard of Angry Birds?

Let me just say if you haven’t heard of Angry Birds from Rovio, you probably don’t have an iPhone (or most smartphones) or a TV or the internet. According to the Wikipedia article (linked for further reading) over 12 million copies have been sold for iOS alone. There is also a holiday version, a version to go with the movie Rio, toys, movie talks, etc. You have to check out this video too…

So why am I writing about this game? It falls under the category of huge time waster filler for me. It is a very simple game, you have a slingshot to flick birds towards pigs who have stolen your eggs. Sounds dumb? Try it, there is a free version for each version, and let me know if you can put it down.

The goal is to eliminate all of the pigs on each level. But there is more to it, you get points for how much destruction you cause and based on how many points you get 1 to 3 stars (I have 3 stars on all of the current levels, if you need help ask me or Google it for help videos). There are also Golden Eggs to earn for various achievements. They are always coming out with new levels and versions so the game play is constantly changing.

It is hugely entertaining, well developed and highly addicting. I could go on about this game for days but I will stop, if you don’t have it at least try it because it is the most popular iPhone game there is.

Do you need more battery life on your iPhone or other iDevice?

Apple has a good battery built into the iPhone but on those heavy use days (today while waiting in Traffic Court) sometimes you need a little bit more. Before I went on a recent trip to Hawaii I knew I was going to need some battery help. I went on Amazon and did a search for “External iPhone Battery” and received 2,244 results. I knew there were a lot of external batteries options, and some great ones built into cases but I wanted something simple and CHEAP and didn’t want to give up my current case.

I saw that the third one, the Stitchway UltraPower 1900 mAh (BLACK) Backup Battery Charger(the title is even longer on Amazon), had 3.5 stars and was only $6.80 (+.50 shipping), I was intrigued. After reading all of the reviews and realizing it was a fraction of the price of the other options I ordered two.

Review: First of all I used all of one and half of the other while gaming the whole way to Hawaii. The device is simple and it just works. It has two connectors, one end plugs into your iPhone, the other takes an iPhone cable. You can charge it up while charging your phone and you are good to go. It is reusable but I haven’t done any longevity testing.

The connector does seem a little loose but I think this is on purpose so it doesn’t break or hurt your device. I do have to admit that this option isn’t a “pretty Apple-like” accessory, but the price got me over that pretty quick.

One thing I might advise to go with it is a Cable Extender so you don’t have to hold the device and the battery together.

Verdict: If you ever think your battery wont make it when your away from power, pick one up, keep it charged and with you!

will work with: iPod, iPhone, iPad, Touch

7 Little Words – Need a great new fun word puzzle app?

One thing I will be doing on this site is letting you know what apps I think are worth a download. I will go back and get you some of the classics that make my iPhone better, but I have been spending some time with 7 Little Words lately and I like it.

It is an incredibly simple game, you are given clues and a bunch of letter groups. You then put together the letter groupings to create the answers. Once you have solved the 7 clues it is on to the next level. It is a challenging game that I believe qualifies as brain exercise.

The best part it is free. There are 30 levels and more coming soon, maybe at a price. Go check it out on iTunes now. Note: It is currently 14th on the App Store Free Charts.

7 Little Words is a game brought to us by Blue Ox Technologies Ltd. who also created Moxie and Moxie 2. Moxie is another word puzzle I might come back to.

Side Bonus: I play a lot of Words With Friends and I think this will help me expand my vocabulary in a visual way.
