What if I’m not getting an iPhone 5?

Source: Cult of Mac

I get so wrapped up in the iPhone world that sometimes I forget about all of you out there that don’t wake up at midnight to preorder the latest phone. Those of you that don’t have staggered contracts so that you can get your new iPhone every year and pass your hand-me-down to your significant other.

Well there is good news for you, and best of all it comes before my new iPhone. Tomorrow Sept. 19th 2012 Apple is releasing iOS 6. There are a ton of new features even for the old current iPhones. Here is a great article summarizing what is new from the great people over at Cult of Mac:

Every single feature that is new in iOS 6 mega guide

So don’t miss out on the great new features (Some wont work on phones before the 4S), here is an article from Tech Crunch on the what, when, where and how on getting updated:

Reminder: Apple’s iOS 6 Arrives Tomorrow, Here’s What You Need To Know

Most importantly, don’t forget to back up to the iCloud or iTunes before you update!

What should I do if I want an iPhone 5 next Friday? (Updated)

So unless you do not have the internet, which would mean you are not reading this, you know the iPhone 5 was announced yesterday. Now the question is how to get one. The iPhone 5 will be released next Friday, Sept. 21. But how can you make sure you get one? All reports show that demand for the newest magic from Apple is high.

Well you could pack up your tent, call in sick for a week, and head to your local Apple Store to camp out. Or you can preorder tomorrow, the 14th. That is what I did for both the iPhone 4 and 4s and it was well worth it. For the iPhone 4 I had it delivered to the AT&T store, walked in with about 5 other people the morning it was released. I then walked down to the Apple Store and showed it off to the people that had been waiting in line for hours, and weren’t guaranteed a phone.

Preorders on Apple.com start at midnight Pacific Time tonight. You can preorder it there or on most carrier websites. You can also stop by your carrier store, especially if you want to talk to someone in person.

I would advise doing it as early as possible in the day to make sure you get one on Friday. If you do it later you might be pushed out. Happy iPhone 5ing!

Thinking about switching carriers? Here is a great article from iMore comparing iPhone carriers.

Note: Sorry if you are reading this after the morning of the 14th, best of luck to you in getting an iPhone 5 in the next month.

Update: Some reports are saying that Apple sold out of preorders in one hour! I woke up and ordered mine at 12:30. People that waited until realistic hours of the morning will most likely have to wait a few extra weeks. Don’t worry I will tell you all about mine though 🙂

How should you shoot video on your iPhone?

Source: Cult of Mac

There is a terrible tragedy happening when video is taken with iPhones. It has been accurately diagnosed as Vertical Video Syndrome. I witnessed this first hand last weekend at a wedding where some of the greatest moments on the dance floor were recorded vertically. Now I can understand that maybe the owner of the iPhone, who shall remain anonymous, thought it was the best way to capture the moment, and it may have seemed that way on the screen. But the problem comes when it is time to watch the video. I could rant about explain this problem in words, but this PSA sums it up perfectly, with puppets.

So please I beg of you, help spread the word, together we can stop this problem and make better videos for every one.

The iPhone turned 5 Friday, how did you celebrate?

source: TechnoBuffalo

For me it is hard to remember life before the iPhone. Friday, July 29th 2012, marked 5 years since the first iPhone went on sale. I remember the day clearly, I got off work and told my wife that I was going to see what was going on at the AT&T store. At $600 it was not really an impulse buy, but I ended up coming home with two (I did return one the next week).

So how did I celebrate the iPhone’s birthday? I didn’t do anything special, I just did what I do every single day… I made sure that my iPhone was never more than a foot away from me, I checked mail, I sent texts, played games, got some new apps, took some pictures/videos, browsed the web, and even talked on the phone.

When Apple announced the iPhone in January of 2007 no one knew what to think, it was a whole new direction for Apple in a relatively new market. 5 short years later it has completely changed the cell phone industry. Both in design and what we use our phones for. Don’t believe me? Check out the picture below for a before and after picture.

Or read this article from the LA Times with some great comments from some big names in tech from 2007 before the iPhone was released.

Or read this article on RazorianFly with a great infographic.

Or watch this great video CultofMac put together about the last 5 years for a quick history lesson.

I hear a lot of discussion in the tech world about how human years translate into tech years. All I can say is in 5 years the iPhone has grown up and made a difference…
